Alex Mahoney | | Alex started diving while attending the University of Northumbria at Newcastle in 1999. After the completion of his degree in geography, Alex became a qualified PADI Divemaster in October that year and took his new found love of diving to the best place he could think of, the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia. After a three month internship Alex passed his PADI instructor examinations with flying colours and within days was teaching people his love of diving out on the reef. After nine months in Australia, and a summer working in a small dive shop in the UK, the lure of warmer waters was irresistible, and Alex purchased a one-way ticket to Thailand. Having already previously visited Koh Phi Phi Island the year before, Alex decided it would be the perfect place to work as a scuba diving instructor. Alex remained on Phi Phi Island until October 2004, when he moved to the southern Thai island of Koh Mook, to help set up and manage a new dive center. | | The tragic events of the morning of the 26th December 2004 changed everybody’s lives when the devastating Asian Tsunami wrecked havoc on the coastline of southern Thailand. After a brief trip back to the UK, Alex and So returned to Thailand and set up Dive Travel Asia on the island of Phuket. After teaching hundreds of people and logging thousands of dives, Alex’s love for diving has never altered, and he continues to convey this love and passion for diving and the underwater environment on to others. | Alex’s Profile : | Student Certifications | 500+ | | Logged Dives | 4500+ | | Favourite Dive Site | East of Eden, Similan Islands | | Favourite Creature | Manta Ray | | PADI Divemaster | October 2000 | | PADI Assistant Instructor | March 2001 | | PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor | April 2001 | | PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer | November 2001 | | PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Instructor | March 2001 | | PADI Project Aware Instructor | March 2001 | | PADI Aware Coral Reef Conservation Instructor | July 2001 | | PADI Deep Diver Instructor | November 2001 | | PADI Dry Suit Instructor | November 2001 | | PADI Underwater Naturalist | November 2001 | | PADI Night Diver Instructor | November 2001 | | PADI Wreck Diver Instructor | November 2001 | | PADI Oxygen First Aid Instructor | June 2002 | | PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Instructor | May 2004 | | PADI Underwater Photographer Instructor | May 2004 | | PADI Underwater Videographer | May 2004 | | Emergency First Response Instructor | May 2003 | | PADI Underwater Digital Photography Instructor | May 2009 | Awarded the PADI Certificate of Recognition for Excellence for Outstanding Customer Service Sopit Mahoney | After graduating from university with a degree in tourism in 2001, Sopit’s first dive wasn’t until 2003 when she met Alex.
