Ready to take the plunge and earn a PADI certification? The PADI Scuba Diver course is your gateway to the wonderful world of diving. The PADI Scuba Diver certification allows divers to a maximum depth of 12m/40feet, under the direct supervision of a PADI professional. The course is conducted over 2-3 days and is sub-divided into 3 sections, knowledge development, confined water dives and open water dives. This course is recommended to people who might not have enough time to complete the full PADI Open Water course , or people who would like the extra supervision after gaining certification.
Knowledge Development
For the Scuba Diver certification students must complete the first three sections of the PADI Open Water courses theory. These sections cover the basic theory behind diving, such as physics, physiology and diving equipment. Each of the three sections is started by the student watching a section of the PADI Open Water DVD, followed by a review of the section with your instructor, where you can ask any questions that you might have. After each section is completed, each student must complete a short multiple-choice exam.
Confined Water Sessions
As with the PADI Open Water course, your confined water dives take place in a swimming pool. Students must complete a series of skills both underwater and on the surface. Your instructor will have you watch them demonstrating each skill, before asking you to repeat each skill in turn. This section of the course, like all of the others, is performance based, not time based, so once a skill is completed to a satisfactory level, you will move on with the course. All of the skills focus on teaching you the fundamental dive skills you will need, such as equipment assembly and disassembly, mask and regulator clearing, handling out-of-air emergencies and buoyancy control.
Open Water Dives
To become certified as a PADI Scuba Diver, students must complete 2 open water dives to a maximum depth of 12m/40feet. During each of these dives, the instructor will have the students perform several dive skills which were covered during the confined water sessions. During both dives the instructor will also spend time guiding the students around the spectacular tropical reefs where you can expect to see, turtles, rays, eels and maybe even a friendly leopard shark. Once the final open water dive has been completed, and all the other sections have been finished, the students will be awarded the certification of PADI Scuba Diver.
Course Requirements
Before you can start the PADI Scuba Diver course, there are several requirements that must be met. Firstly you must complete a medical history form, secondly you must complete and sign a Statement of Understanding and a Liability waiver. Another requirement is that you must be able to swim 200m and float/tread water for 10 min. As of January 2006, it was made compulsory by PADI that all students have their own PADI Open Water Manual. This manual is included in the course price.
