Ready for the next step? The PADI Advanced Open Water diver program is designed to take you to that next step. Available to any PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent certification), the course takes the divers skills and knowledge to the next level.
The course takes a minimum of two days to complete and comprises of 5 open water dives. This course is sub-divided into two sections, knowledge development and open water dives.
Knowledge Development
The knowledge development portion of this course is much less than with your entry level scuba diving course, with the main emphasis of the course focused on improving you’re in-water dive skills and ability.
For each of the five dives that you complete on the course, the student must complete the corresponding knowledge review. So for example, you choose to complete the Wreck, Photography, and Underwater Naturalist dives, then you would complete the relevant chapters on these dives from your PADI Adventures in Diving Manual.
There are no theory exams for the Advanced Open Water course.
Open Water Dives
For certification as a PADI Advanced Open Water diver, the student must complete 5 open water dives, called Adventure Dives. Out of these 5 Adventure Dives, two are compulsory, leaving 3 optional dives for the student to complete. The 2 compulsory dives are the Deep dive and the Navigation dive. For the 3 optional dives, students may choose from the following dives:
- Wreck
- Night
- Underwater Naturalist
- Multi-level and Computer
- Photography
- Search and Recovery
- Fish ID
- Drift
- Diver Propulsion Vehicles (DPV)
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
For each dive that you select, your instructor will introduce you to the different skills and procedures required to complete the dives safely, whilst enjoying the dive as much as possible.
Certification
Once you have completed the 5 dives, and finished the five corresponding knowledge reviews, your instructor certify you as a PADI Advanced Open Water diver. This certification allows the holder to dive to a depth of 30m/100feet, and is a stepping-stone to completing a PADI Specialty course. Each Adventure Dive that you complete during your Advanced Open Water course counts as the first dive of any corresponding PADI Specialty course, for example, if you wish to complete the PADI Digital Photography Specialty , which is 2 dives, your Photography Adventure dive will count as the first dive of the course, leaving only one dive to complete the Specialty.
Course Requirements
To enroll in the PADI Advanced Open Water course, you must be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent certification.) You will also need to complete a medical history form and liability release paperwork. The student is also required to purchase the PADI Adventures in Diving Manual.
