Want to try scuba diving? Don’t want to commit to doing a full course? If your answers are ‘yes’ then the PADI Discover Scuba Diving course is the course for you. Designed to introduce you to the world of diving, the Discover Scuba Diving course lets you try diving under the constant supervision of a professional PADI diving instructor.

The course is typically run over 1 day and starts by the instructor giving the students a thorough safety and dive briefing. During this briefing your instructor will cover all of the safety issues involved in the dive, they will also cover what will happen during the dive, what you will do and what you will see. Before the dive, the instructor will run through some simple skills that you must practice at the beginning of the first dive.

At the beginning of the dive, your instructor will take you to a shallow part of the reef. In this shallow section of the reef, your instructor will have you practice 4 simple skills, all of which are designed to help you become more relaxed, and give you the confidence to deal with any small issues that might arise, for instance, what do you do if you get water in your mask?, what do you do if you have water in the regulator?, and what do you do if you feel that you cannot breathe?

After these skills have been completed, the real fun begins!
Under the supervision of your instructor, you will be guided around the beautiful coral reefs where you will see a multitude of spectacular fish and stunning coral reefs. The second dive is much the same as the first, with the exception of that you don’t have to complete the skills you did on the first dive. Although no certification is gained, once finished, your PADI Discover Scuba Diving certificate allows you to dive again within one year without having to complete the skills again.

To start the course you need to complete a small amount of paperwork, with a short medical questionnaire, and a liability release. Students must also be a minimum age of 10 years old.

Beware

Please remember that when you are choosing a place to do your diving course, it is not the center that is important, but the instructor. Many of the large dive centers employ inexperienced instructors, and you want to avoid this at all costs. If you are unsure please ask the center who your instructor will be and ask to see their qualifications. Here at Dive Travel Asia, the instructors that we use have a minimum of 1000 dives, and must have been an instructor for at least 5 years.
