The course can be completed in as little as one day, and involves three open water dives and a knowledge development session with your PADI instructor.

The course usually takes place around the gentle sloping coral reefs of Racha Yai Island , located due south of Phuket. Your experienced PADI Instructor will cover four main topics during the course, these are:

1. The planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of search and recovery diving

2. Limited visibility diving and special underwater navigation techniques

3. Safety considerations and proper techniques used for object location, including the use of various search patterns, lines and reels.

4. Proper techniques and safety considerations for the recovery of objects using various lifting devices.

 The PADI Search and Recovery course is very rewarding, and teaches divers valuable skills that they will use time and again. Divers interested in the environment will be able to take a more active roll in underwater clean ups, and will also be able to assist in the creation of artificial reefs, like has been done recently on the Phi Phi Islands . The search patterns you will learn will also come in handy, especially if you decide to enroll on the PADI Rescue Diver Course .

Please remember that when you are choosing a place to do your diving course, it is not the center that is important, but the instructor. Many of the large dive centers employ inexperienced instructors, and you want to avoid this at all costs. If you are unsure please ask the center who your instructor will be and ask to see their qualifications. Here at Dive Travel Asia, the instructors that we use have a minimum of 1000 dives, and must have been an instructor for at least 5 years.
