Anemone Reef

Anemone Fish Located in between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, Anemone reef is a beautiful pinnacle covered from head to toe in colourful anemones. The reef is situated close to the King Cruiser Wreck and Phuket Shark Point and is a dive best situated for intermediate divers and above.

Anemone Reef once broke the surface, until in May 1997, the King Cruiser car ferry collided with the reef and took the first three meters of the reef with it. Today the reef has fully recovered, and has become one of the most popular dive sites around Phuket.

The dive starts with a descent down the mooring line to the base of the pinnacle, where divers can expect to find docile leopard sharks , bamboo sharks and small stingrays. Large sea fans sway in the current and provide cover for butterfly fish and ornate ghost pipefish. Divers will spend the remainder of the dive slowly circling their way upwards towards the top, which sits perfectly at 5 meters for your safety stops. As divers circle the reef they are greeted with hundreds of purple and blue anemones, home to several different species of anemone fish, including everyone’s favourite, the western clownfish, or Nemo. The anemones are also home to tiny anemone crabs and shrimps, so divers will need to have a keen eye. Sitting camouflaged against bare rock patches, bearded scorpion fish sit patiently for their next meal, so divers need to be careful about where they place their hands. Another common sight here are black banded sea snakes, these snakes are highly venomous, but pose no threat to divers, can be seen swimming in between rocks and corals, using their tongues to smell at small gobies for their next meal. Divers looking out away from the main pinnacle will see schools of snappers, tuna and barracudas swimming effortlessly against the currents. Several species of moray eel can also be found around this site, especially white eyed morays and yellow margined morays.

As Anemone reef is located so close to its neighboring site, Hawksbill turtles will often be seen munching on some bubble coral before swimming off into the blue to another site.

Divers should be aware that Anemone reef can be subject to strong currents, and this matched with the depth can lead to a quite challenging dive, and we only recommended this dive site to intermediate divers and above

Testimonials

I passed my Open Water course thanks to Alex when he worked in Phi Phi. He made the whole diving experience enjoyable because he the made the group feel like they were in safe hands yet at the same time always very sociable and up for a laugh. On my last visit to Phuket, I met Alex and So again. They took me diving and I had a great time. They both made me feel very welcome and their knowledge of Thailand and the local diving spots was fascinating. I would definitely recommend that beginners and experienced divers should take advantage of the great service that Dive Travel Asia provides. Andrew Davison – London, UK.
