Beacon Beach had always been a popular spot for conducting check dives at the beginning of Similan trips, but in August 2002, the sinking of a liveaboard boat, gave the reef a new lease of life. Beacon Beach is located of Similan Island number 8, or Koh Similan, which is the largest of the Similan Islands.
Atlantis X was a 27meter mono-hull wooden liveaboard, the captain tried to drive the boat up onto the beach when he noticed the boat was taking on water, but got stuck on the coral at the edge of the reef. After all passengers and crew were safely removed from the boat, it started to sink and slip backwards down the reef, which is where it lies today at around 16-20m of water. The wreck does not have much coral growth around it, but has become a home for large schools of juvenile fish, a family of batfish and several beautiful lionfish. The sinking of Atlantis X has also give divers an added option during their PADI Advanced Open Water Courses , the Wreck dive.
