During most Similan trips, Breakfast Bend is one of every divemaster’s favourite early morning dives, due to the morning sun lighting up this beautiful reef. This site is situated on the southern end of Similan Island number nine, an area exposed to the Asian Tsunami in December 2004, but the site has survived relatively undamaged.
This is a nice relaxing dive, and often used as the first dive of a liveaboard trip, due to the gentle currents and shallow depth, it is also a great site for snorkelers.
The main reef slopes down from 5 meters to 18 meters, where it slopes off more steeply to over 30 meters. The deeper parts of the site are a great place for spotting white tip reef sharks , spotted garden eels and various species of stingrays. Large granite boulders can also be found on the southern end of the reef, this area can be exposed to strong currents that can lead to sightings of schooling trevally, tunas and barracudas.
The shallower sections of the reef consist of large hard coral formations with scattered sandy patches. The sandy patches are often resting places for docile leopard sharks and khuls stingrays. Several species of angelfish, trigger fish and groupers can also be seen in the shallower sections
