Shark Point

Shark Point Shark Point is home to the best coral reef to be found in the Phuket area. The reef is located only a short distance from the King Cruiser Wreck and Anemone Reef and can be easily found due to its visible rock pinnacle which today is the sight of a small light house. Shark Point or Hin Muang, was the status of a official marine sanctuary in 1992, and its three main pinnacles are home to a vast array of marine life and corals. Divers descending down on the first pinnacle will be greeted by a colourful fix of soft and hard corals protruding out from the pinnacles rock face. This shallow part of the reef is home to butterfly fish, angelfish and pufferfish to name just a few. As divers circle the first pinnacle keep an eye out over the sandy bottom, where several resident Leopard Sharks can be found sleeping during the day light hours. Stingrays and rare snake eels can also be found mooring across the sandy bottom. The second pinnacle is my personal favourite, due to its wonderful mosaic of soft branch corals that sway gentlely in the current. Shark Point is a great place for finding moray eels and several different species can be found here including giant, white-eyed, fimbrilated, yellow margined and zebra morays. Large barrel sponges can be found throughout the site, and are quite often the resting places of lionfish, looking to get out of the current. Divers who are into their macro creatures will be in heaven here with species such as, ghost pipefish, tiger tail seahorses , nudibranches and harlequin shrimp all found around this site. The third pinnacle is a little deeper and is again home to colourful soft corals and some larger hard coral species.

The currents here can be strong, so it is important to keep a close eye on your divemaster who will guide you around the protected sections of the reef.

Testimonials

I've just returned from a couple of weeks in Phuket (Nov/Dev 07), during which I took my PADI Advanced Open Water qualification with Alex.  I can't recommend his diving instruction enough.I only did my Open Water last year but Alex was able to bring my diving skills on a long way, also refreshing my basic skills without going over stuff I was already comfortable with. I particularly recommend Alex's tips on underwater photography. Andrew Hunt – London, UK.
